Sika Elk

Sika Elk, sometimes referred to as deer, are common at the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. Originally from east Asia, they were released on the island in the 1920s.

The elk are quite habituated to the presence of people. I found my long lens (170-500 mm) was too long. I couldn't get the whole elk in the frame.

(Sony A700, iso 640, 180 mm, f/7.1, 1/125 sec, fill flash, tripod), Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, Virginia, October 2007
